I am a graduating MLIS student with experience in teen services and secondary education. Public and school libraries have always been about more than just books to me. They have been a place where I could escape to imaginary worlds, learn about different cultures, and discover new interests. Librarians were my guides throughout, connecting me with books and resources and helping me with unfamiliar technologies. My time as a high school English teacher allowed me to step into this role as I worked with school librarians to nurture young readers. It was this experience with school libraries that led me to pursuing an MLIS degree.
Upon graduation, I intend to pursue a role in public, school, or academic librarianship. My goal is to develop collections and design programs aimed at improving access to information and serving the varied needs of my community. I plan to utilize my time as an educator and experience working in the teen services department of my local public library to guide my work as a librarian. My hope is that when people walk into the library where I work, they feel as welcomed and at-home as I did when I visited the library as a child, teen, and young adult.
Through my teen services internship, I have gained valuable insight into collection development and management, including acquisition and weeding strategies. I have designed book displays and assisted with planning, organizing, and running teen and tween programs. I’ve spent time running the teen department service desk, assisting patrons with reference and resource questions. My internship has also included tasks such as shelving, shelf reading, shelf reorganization, and planning and monitoring passive programming. Throughout my time in this internship, I have done rotations with various other departments of the library as well, including reference, circulation, tech services, IT, collection management, and the computer lab.
Here is a sample of my research as an MLIS student.
